About The Author
Captain Ron Smith
My journey to writing this book began with a deep and lifelong love of the sea. In 1976, at the age of 13, my family moved from Western Massachusetts to Narragansett, Rhode Island, so my father could take over my grandfather’s cobbler business. That move changed my life. I was instantly drawn to the ocean and spent nearly every sunny day at the beach, playing in the waves, learning to boogie board, and attempting to surf— though I never quite mastered it.
Around that time, I met my close friend Dean, who lived just two streets away. We both shared a passion for the water. Dean introduced me to boating; his father, an old “Swamp Yankee” fisherman, allowed us to take his boat out before school. We’d scallop in the mornings, shuck them after school, and sell them to local restaurants by dinner. We also went clamming, water skiing, and spent countless hours on the boat whenever we weren’t in school. Not long after, I bought my first boat, a Boston Whaler.

My first offshore fishing adventure was 20 years ago. I had just purchased an offshore battle wagon—a well-worn old sportfishing boat. Looking back, it probably wasn’t wise for a few inexperienced friends and me to take it 100 miles offshore to the canyons in search of bluefin, yellowfin, or bigeye tuna. We were new to the game but eager to learn, often gathering advice from the seasoned “old salts” and seafarers around the docks.

Captain Ron Smith doesn’t just tell stories; he invites you into his world. You feel his doubts, his courage, and his gratitude in every line. There’s a quiet strength in the way he writes, like someone who’s truly made peace with the sea and himself.
This book made me slow down and appreciates the ocean in a new way. Captain Ron Smith’s storytelling feels pure and heartfelt, almost meditative. It’s about finding balance and meaning.
I’ve read a lot of memoirs, but this one stands apart. Captain Ron Smith writes with humility and warmth, never trying to impress, just to share.
From the first page, I was hooked. Call of the Sea is filled with wonder, nostalgia, and wisdom. Captain Ron Smith has a gift for turning his experiences into universal truths.
